Andover, MA: Modern Luxury Basement

Project Goals

This Andover, MA family wanted a basement that felt less like a lower level and more like a high-end extension of their main living space. Their vision was a sophisticated family room perfect for entertaining guests and relaxing. Key requests included a custom media wall, improved lighting to combat the lack of natural windows, and a dedicated layout that allowed for both movie watching and conversation.

Design & Layout Strategy

We created a modern, open-concept plan centered around a custom-built media wall. To achieve the "premium look" the homeowners desired, we focused heavily on clean lines and a sophisticated neutral color palette.

• Layered Lighting: Since this space has limited natural light, we designed a lighting plan featuring recessed cans for general illumination, warm cove lighting for ambiance, and dedicated art lights.
• Media Focus: The main wall features integrated cable management and acoustic sound dampening behind the drywall to create an immersive theater experience without visual clutter.
• Defined Zones: We used ceiling treatments to visually separate the media area from the quieter reading nook.

Finishes & Materials

Quality was paramount for this project. We selected materials that offer both luxury aesthetics and below-grade performance:

• Flooring: Wide-plank Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) in a cool grey-washed oak finish. It provides the look of hardwood but is 100% waterproof.
• Ceiling: Smooth skim-coated plaster replacing standard drop tiles for a seamless, residential feel.
• Millwork: Custom built-in cabinetry painted in a deep charcoal contrast to anchor the room.
• Moisture Protection: We utilized rigid foam insulation and mold-resistant materials throughout to ensure a healthy environment.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: The original concrete floor was uneven, which would have telegraphed through the new flooring.
Solution: We applied a self-leveling underlayment compound across the entire slab before installation, ensuring a perfectly flat and professional finish.

The Result

The transformation is striking. Walking down the stairs, guests are greeted by a warm, inviting space that rivals any room upstairs. The combination of smart lighting design and premium finishes has created a true luxury retreat right at home in Andover.
